Widgets, widgets, and more widgets

As a reader pointed out, the image from today’s APOD was actually an embedded movie, which my little APOD widget didn’t take to very kindly. I’ve added a little fix to evaluate the image source and verify that it’s at least a valid image extension (.jpg, .gif, .png) before attempting to display it. This version has a couple other enhancements to the error handling. Grab the latest version.

I’ve also uploaded a new widget I threw together, the Wunderphoto Widget, which consumes an image RSS feed from the Weather Underground (Wunderground for short) and then displays a random image from the feed. This widget wasn’t too difficult, just took a little exploring to find some good examples of parsing through XML in PHP. Feel free to download this widget, and let me know what you think.

I think my next widget project will be writing a Wunderground powered weather widget, but we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.

    It’s an abbreviation of Astronomy Picture of the Day, which is a page on one of NASA’s sites that shows a different astronomy related picture every day. That’s where the ‘apod’ image on my sidebar comes from.

    Kewl, I did firgure it our after posting. I loved the story and pics on the news about the black hole swallowing the star. Did you see that? I think it was an artist redention but it sure helped me see what was happening. Thanks Son!!

    This is maybe a silly question, but I want to know if I can install Apod like Flickr or Sonific. Wordpress does´nt allow FTP-upload and it does´nt work, if I try to put the code in a text-widget. But thank you for your efforts.
